JOB DESCRIPTION:

Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a well-qualified Ranch / Feed Yard Assistant for this progressive Nebraska operation. Employer is looking for a dependable, self-motivated individual with a solid cattle background who takes pride in their work, uses good judgment, and can work independently while being a strong team player. This is a hands-on position working with both the cow/calf and feed yard sides of the operation. The ideal candidate will have good livestock instincts, strong herd health skills, and the ability to recognize and address problems in a timely manner. Individual must be willing to pitch in wherever needed and understand that priorities can change based on cattle, weather, and seasonal demands. Employer utilizes rotational grazing practices and is open to new ideas and non-traditional approaches to ranch management. Looking for someone who is willing to learn, communicate, exchange ideas, and contribute to the continued improvement of the operation.

This is an excellent long-term opportunity for someone who enjoys working with cattle, equipment, and the land and wants to become a valuable part of a progressive livestock operation. Great location to raise a family with good schools and employment opportunities for a spouse. Competitive salary will be based on experience, skill set, stability, and references.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Assist with all aspects of the cow/calf operation, including calving, processing, herd health, sorting, moving, and working cattle
  • Monitor cattle closely for sickness, injury, nutritional concerns, and other herd health issues
  • Utilize sound, low-stress cattle handling practices
  • Assist with implementing grazing plans and rotational grazing practices, with cattle moves ranging from approximately one to three days depending on pasture and grazing conditions
  • Monitor pasture conditions, water availability, fencing, and overall cattle performance
  • Assist with feeding cattle and daily feed yard operations
  • Operate telehandlers, skid steers, loaders, tractors, and other ranch/feed yard equipment safely and efficiently
  • Clean pens and maintain bunks, water systems, corrals, alleys, and livestock facilities
  • Build, repair, and maintain pasture and feed yard fencing
  • Assist with general maintenance of buildings, corrals, equipment, and other ranch/feed yard infrastructure
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment
  • Work closely with ownership and other employees while being capable of handling assigned responsibilities independently
  • Assist wherever needed during busy seasons and adapt to the changing needs of the operation

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid cow/calf and cattle production background with good overall livestock knowledge
  • Strong herd health skills with the ability to identify and appropriately respond to sick or injured cattle
  • Experience with calving and general cow/calf management
  • Experience with low-stress cattle handling techniques
  • Understanding of pasture management and rotational grazing; experience implementing grazing plans preferred
  • Open-minded and willing to consider new ideas and progressive approaches to cattle and grazing management
  • Experience operating ranch and feed yard equipment, including telehandlers, skid steers, loaders, and tractors
  • Mechanical aptitude with the willingness and ability to assist with routine equipment and facility maintenance
  • Safety-minded with good judgment and common sense around cattle, equipment, and feed yard operations
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and follow through
  • Forward-thinking while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Dependable with a positive attitude and strong work ethic
