Position Overview

Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is seeking a dependable, trustworthy Pen Rider for an established cattle operation in Nevada. This is a year-round position supporting a diverse livestock and agricultural operation.

This is a hands-on position for an individual who understands feedlot cattle, can recognize changes in cattle behavior and health, and has the practical experience necessary to identify and doctor cattle effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ride pens daily to monitor cattle health, behavior, appetite, and overall condition.
  • Identify cattle showing signs of illness, injury, poor performance, or other health concerns.
  • Pull cattle requiring treatment and accurately evaluate their condition.
  • Perform visual doctoring and routine cattle health treatments according to established protocols.
  • Recognize early signs of respiratory disease, digestive issues, lameness, injury, and other common feedlot health concerns.
  • Assist with cattle processing, vaccinations, and routine animal handling as needed.
  • Maintain accurate treatment and animal health records.
  • Communicate cattle health concerns to management and other members of the cattle health team.
  • Monitor cattle following treatment and identify animals requiring additional attention.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Work closely with the feedlot team to support cattle health, performance, and overall operation efficiency.
  • Assist with other feedlot duties as needed.

Horse & Pen Riding Program

This position includes an established horse program designed to support the Pen Rider in performing daily cattle health work.

The operation generally works with approximately three horses per Pen Rider and provides:

  • Horse housing
  • Feed
  • Shoeing
  • Vaccinations

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous Pen Rider, Cattle Health Technician, or similar feedlot experience.
  • Strong ability to recognize cattle that are sick, injured, off-feed, or otherwise not performing normally.
  • Solid understanding of cattle behavior and common feedlot health issues.
  • Comfortable working horseback and handling cattle from horseback.
  • Ability to make sound observations and communicate cattle health concerns.
  • Ability to work independently while also being a productive member of the feedlot team.
  • Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Commitment to proper cattle handling and animal welfare.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Pen Rider who wants to work in a professional cattle-feeding environment where strong cattle-health skills and practical horsemanship are valued. The position offers competitive compensation, housing, and an established horse program that includes care for up to three horses. Located in a rural area of northern Nevada, the position offers wide-open country, a strong Western lifestyle, and the opportunity to become part of a long-term cattle operation while enjoying the independence and responsibility that comes with the role.
