Opportunity Overview
Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for an experienced Beef Cattle Herd Manager for a family-run row crop and registered Angus operation in Indiana. The operation consists of more than 3,000 acres of corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, and oats, along with approximately 100 purebred Angus breeding cows and 50+ head of feeder cattle in a direct-to-client feeding program. Show heifers, bred females, and bulls are marketed through private treaty sales in the fall and spring. The employer is looking for a dependable, self-motivated cattle person to take responsibility for the day-to-day care and management of the herd. This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable working independently, recognizes what needs to be done, and takes pride in maintaining healthy cattle and well-kept facilities.
Position Responsibilities
- Handle the day-to-day care and management of the cattle herd, including feeding, bedding, water management, and monitoring herd health
- Provide minor treatment for illness or injury as needed
- Monitor and assist during calving season, including tagging and vaccinating calves
- Make day-to-day decisions regarding cattle diets and pasture rotation
- Prepare feed rations on the farm
- Participate in breeding season, including bull selection, AI, synchronization protocols, and heat detection
- Maintain appropriate herd records
- Assist with clipping and preparation of cattle for private treaty sales
- Assist customers with questions following cattle sales
- Haul cattle as needed for sale customers and freezer-beef delivery
- Maintain and repair fencing, including single-wire and high-tensile fence
- Assist with hay production as needed
- Perform basic maintenance on cattle equipment, including John Deere tractors, skid steers, mowers, and related equipment
- Maintain cattle facilities and surrounding grounds, including mowing and general upkeep
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a show, registered, or production beef cattle operation
- Solid cattle-handling, herd-health, feeding, calving, and general management experience
- Experience with breeding-season activities
- AI experience preferred but not required; employer is willing to send a proven employee to AI school
- Experience building and repairing single-wire and high-tensile fencing
- Farm equipment experience preferred
- Hay-production experience is a plus but not required
- Basic mechanical and equipment-maintenance skills
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently for significant portions of the day
- Dependable, responsible, and attentive to cattle health and overall operation upkeep
Compensation & Benefits
