Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a qualified Assistant Cattle Manager / Livestock for their livestock operation in Montana. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced cattleman looking to become an important part of a highly respected, progressive Angus operation.

Employer is searching for a hands-on, dependable individual with solid cattle experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to take on responsibility within a large and active ranch operation. This is a working cattle ranch, and the successful candidate must enjoy being directly involved in day-to-day livestock production and understand the seasonal demands associated with a large cattle operation.

The ranch currently manages large mother-cow herd, yearling heifers and bulls as part of an established Angus program.

This position will work closely with ownership and report to the owner. Employer is looking for more than simply a general ranch hand. The right individual will have the experience, maturity, work ethic, and leadership ability to assist with livestock operations while also helping organize work, delegate responsibilities to other crew members, and take ownership of assigned duties.

This is a cattleman's position—not a cowboy position. There is a fair amount of horseback cattle work, and candidates should be capable and comfortable working cattle horseback. However, the position involves all aspects of livestock production and requires an individual willing to step in wherever needed. Candidates must understand that manual labor and long days during peak production periods are part of operating a successful working cattle ranch.

Responsibilities will include assisting with cow/calf and yearling management, herd health, calving, breeding, cattle processing, livestock movement, feeding, general ranch work, and other day-to-day cattle-production responsibilities. The Assistant Cattle Manager will also assist with coordinating and directing other ranch employees as needed.

Because this is a registered Angus operation, the position also involves interaction with customers. Employer places a high value on finding an individual who is professional, personable, and an effective communicator—someone they can confidently introduce to customers and trust to represent the ranch and its breeding program in a positive manner.

An important responsibility will be assisting with deliveries to customers. Candidate should have experience safely pulling and maneuvering livestock trailers and be comfortable hauling cattle. CDL/semi experience would be beneficial but is not required.

Previous registered cattle or seedstock experience is preferred but not required. Employer is willing to consider an accomplished cattleman from a strong commercial cow/calf background who has the desire and ability to learn the registered and seedstock side of the business.l

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who communicates well, follows through on responsibilities, works effectively as part of a team, and understands when additional effort is required to get the job done. Agriculture is seasonal, and candidates must be willing to work extended hours during calving, breeding, haying, sales, and other peak periods. Employer is also actively working to maintain a sustainable workload and provide appropriate time off during less demanding periods of the year.

Candidates of varying ages and backgrounds will be considered. Of greatest importance is finding an experienced, hardworking, professional cattle person who respects the operation, communicates effectively with management, and wants to become a long-term member of the ranch team.
Three personal horses can generally be accommodated.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid hands-on cow/calf and cattle-production experience
  • Strong cattle handling and stockmanship skills
  • Horseback cattle experience and experience roping for pasture doctoring
  • Understanding of herd health, calving, breeding, and general livestock production
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to perform physical/manual ranch work
  • Ability to assist in leading, organizing, and delegating work to other crew members
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact positively with customers
  • Experience safely pulling and maneuvering livestock/stock trailers
  • Equipment operation and general ranch maintenance abilities preferred
  • CDL and/or semi-truck experience a plus
  • Dependable, responsible, and able to work independently as well as within a team
  • Must understand and accept the seasonal hours associated with a large working cattle ranch
  • Desire to build a long-term career with a progressive family-owned cattle operation
