Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a well-qualified Shop & Fleet Maintenance Manager for a large, progressive Idaho agricultural operation. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced agricultural maintenance professional to take ownership of a newly constructed, large modern shop supporting a substantial farming, harvesting, trucking, and dairy-related equipment fleet.

The successful candidate will oversee the daily operation of the shop, lead a team of approximately six to eight experienced mechanics and technicians, organize equipment maintenance and repair priorities, and help implement professional maintenance, inventory, cost-tracking, and recordkeeping systems.

This position requires a strong leader who understands agricultural and heavy equipment, communicates well with mechanics and operational managers, and can keep a large fleet running during an extended and demanding production season.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, supervise, and support approximately six to eight mechanics and technicians.
  • Organize daily shop workflow and assign repairs based on operational priorities.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, inspections, emergency repairs, and major rebuild projects.
  • Maintain accountability without unnecessarily micromanaging experienced employees.
  • Evaluate the strengths of shop personnel and assign work accordingly.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair timelines, and shop priorities to farm and harvest management.
  • Help establish organized work-order, maintenance-history, and equipment-cost records.
  • Implement and manage computerized fleet-maintenance and inventory systems.
  • Track labor, parts, materials, downtime, and repair costs by equipment unit.
  • Develop reliable preventative-maintenance schedules for a large agricultural fleet.
  • Manage parts, filters, lubricants, tires, tools, fuel-related records, and shop supplies.
  • Coordinate parts purchasing and work with dealerships, vendors, and outside service providers.
  • Help determine whether equipment should be repaired, rebuilt, retained as a backup unit, or considered for replacement.
  • Oversee major mechanical work, including engine and component replacement, equipment tear-downs, and planned rebuilds.
  • Ensure the shop remains safe, organized, productive, and prepared for seasonal demands.
  • Work closely with a shop administrative employee responsible for documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with employee training, performance management, hiring, and disciplinary matters.
  • Help develop procedures for accurately billing repair work between company divisions and, potentially, outside contractors.

OPERATION AND EQUIPMENT

This position supports a large, diversified agricultural operation producing forage and feed crops for a major livestock enterprise.

The operation performs nearly all crop production and harvesting activities in-house and operates an extensive fleet that includes:

  • A large number of semitrucks and heavy trucks
  • Forage harvesters and choppers
  • Pack tractors and silage equipment
  • Swathers and hay equipment
  • Farm tractors
  • Loaders and skid steers
  • Manure-handling equipment
  • Irrigation equipment
  • Pumps
  • Service vehicles
  • Additional agricultural and heavy equipment

The fleet is relatively modern but accumulates significant annual hours. Maintenance demands remain high throughout a production and harvest season that may extend from spring through late fall.

The company is moving into a newly constructed shop featuring multiple pull-through service bays, a large parts area, a service pit, administrative workspace, and room to perform major repairs and equipment rebuilds.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five or more years of agricultural, diesel, truck, or heavy-equipment maintenance experience.
  • Previous shop-management, service-management, foreman, or lead-mechanic experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate mechanics or technicians.
  • Working knowledge of agricultural machinery, diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Understanding of preventative maintenance and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Ability to organize a high-volume shop and prioritize repairs during critical production periods.
  • Strong computer, documentation, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Experience with computerized fleet-maintenance, work-order, or inventory software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with mechanics, equipment operators, managers, vendors, and ownership.
  • Practical leadership style with the ability to hold employees accountable while respecting experienced personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

The Shop & Fleet Maintenance Manager does not need to personally perform every specialized repair. However, the individual must possess enough mechanical knowledge and credibility to understand the work, communicate effectively with technicians, evaluate repair plans, and ensure projects are completed properly.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Agricultural shop or fleet-management experience
  • Forage harvesting or large crop-production experience
  • Experience with high-horsepower tractors, forage harvesters, semitrucks, loaders, and silage equipment
  • Major component, engine-rebuild, or equipment-rebuild experience
  • Parts and inventory management
  • Maintenance cost tracking and internal billing
  • Implementation of new shop procedures or maintenance software
  • English and Spanish communication skills are helpful but not required

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a hands-on management position supporting a fast-paced agricultural operation. The individual must be comfortable working in both shop and field environments and responding to equipment needs during planting, harvesting, and other critical production periods.

Seasonal demands may require extended hours, occasional weekends, and rapid response to significant equipment breakdowns.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The employer offers a competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.

Benefits are expected to include:

  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Company vehicle

Additional compensation, benefits, and relocation considerations may be discussed with highly qualified candidates.
