Media ArticleMichelle Short of Macomb County has been recognized with the 2026 Michigan Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award for her contributions to youth development, agricultural education, and community service through 4-H.
Short is one of five Michigan 4-H volunteers selected for the award, which honors individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership in agricultural education and youth development. Her efforts have helped young people build leadership skills, gain agricultural knowledge, and participate in hands-on learning experiences.
As president of the Macomb County 4-H Horse Committee, a member of the Macomb County Fair Board, and horse superintendent, Short has created educational opportunities for youth in areas including horses, livestock, floriculture, and horticulture. Her work has helped participants develop practical skills in animal care, agriculture, and responsibility.
Short said "My greatest reward as a 4-H volunteer and leader has been watching our members grow in their communities and utilize their skills and experiences to become leaders."
Throughout her years of service, Short has encouraged youth to take on leadership roles, build confidence, and become active members of their communities. She has also supported fundraising efforts, community outreach programs, and service projects that connect young people with meaningful volunteer opportunities.
In addition to her 4-H involvement, Short has helped promote agricultural literacy through the Macomb County Farm Bureau's Project Rural Education Days. The program introduces students and families to agriculture, food production, and agricultural career opportunities.
Recipients of the award receive a $1,000 grant through the Michigan 4-H Foundation to support agricultural programming, volunteer training, educational resources, and other initiatives that strengthen local and statewide 4-H programs.
Short will be honored at the Michigan 4-H Legacy Awards Celebration on Oct. 3 in Lansing. The recognition highlights her dedication to agricultural education, youth leadership, and creating opportunities that help young people succeed within and beyond 4-H.
