Li Zhang and Timothy Boltz Honored by Poultry Science

MSU faculty honored for teaching and research leadership

Mississippi State University faculty members Li Zhang and Timothy Boltz received early career awards from the Poultry Science Association, recognizing their achievements in poultry research, teaching, and industry-focused education.

Two faculty members from Mississippi State University's Department of Poultry Science have received early career awards from the Poultry Science Association (PSA), recognizing their contributions to poultry research and education.

Associate Professor Li Zhang received the Early Achievement for Research Award, while Assistant Professor Timothy Boltz earned the Early Achievement in Teaching Award. Both were recognized at the Poultry Science Association's annual meeting in Toronto, Canada.

Since joining MSU in 2018, Zhang has focused on poultry health research using microbiology, genomics, and microbiome science. His work includes developing diagnostic tools, vaccines, and microbiome-based alternatives to antibiotics that help improve poultry health and production efficiency.

Zhang said "They only give this award to one person every two years, so this award means so much to my career and gives me confidence in the work that we are doing."

Zhang also serves as a scientist with the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES), where he continues to conduct research benefiting the poultry industry.

Timothy Boltz, who joined the MSU faculty in 2022, was recognized for his excellence in teaching and student development. He teaches courses in poultry nutrition, broiler production, and avian anatomy and physiology, emphasizing practical and hands-on learning experiences.

Boltz said "It is a big honor to have individuals in our association recognize the hours of work and effort I commit to teaching the next generation of professionals; however, the biggest honor is helping students succeed in this vital industry."

The awards highlight Mississippi State University's commitment to advancing poultry science through research, education, and industry engagement. The Department of Poultry Science, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, continues to support innovation and workforce development for the poultry sector.
