Media ArticleAudrain County Associate Commissioner Leslie Meyer has been appointed chair of the National Association of Counties' (NACo) Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee. The appointment was announced during NACo’s annual conference in New Orleans and gives Audrain County a stronger voice in federal agriculture policy discussions.
“I am honored to have been chosen,” Meyer said. She added that the role provides Audrain County with an opportunity to participate in important conversations at the federal level.
Meyer has served on the committee for four years, including three years as vice chair. She has also worked on resolutions designed to address challenges facing farmers and improve conditions for production agriculture.
The resolutions focus on reducing input costs, supporting new agricultural markets, advancing research on products made from U.S.-grown crops, and encouraging domestic fertilizer production. They also call for improvements to USDA market-reporting systems and reductions in tariffs on agricultural inputs.
Meyer noted that many farmers continue to face financial challenges due to rising costs and low commodity prices. She warned that ongoing economic pressures could threaten the future of family farms across the country.
As the nation’s largest organization representing county governments, NACo helps shape policy priorities and advocates for local communities in Washington, D.C. In her new position, Meyer will focus on issues affecting agriculture and rural counties while working with federal leaders to support residents and local governments.
