Media ArticleThe University of Kentucky has named Jill Stowe as director of UK Ag Equine Programs and Dickson Professor of Equine Science and Management, effective Aug. 1. Stowe returns to the leadership role after previously serving as director from 2013 to 2016 and has remained actively involved in the program’s development through teaching, research and academic leadership.
UK Ag Equine Programs is one of the college’s largest undergraduate majors and serves as a hub for equine-related education, research and Extension activities. Stowe recently served as director of undergraduate studies for both the equine science and management and agricultural economics degree programs, helping guide curriculum development while teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
An accomplished agricultural economist, Stowe has led several significant research initiatives focused on Kentucky’s horse industry. She directed the Kentucky Equine Surveys in 2012 and 2022, with the 2012 survey representing the first comprehensive statewide study of the equine sector since 1977.
Her research interests span a range of industry topics, including equine veterinary services, horse owner spending patterns, equine insurance, Thoroughbred yearling profitability and the economic value of horse farms in Central Kentucky. Through her work, she has contributed valuable insights into the economics and sustainability of the equine industry.
University leaders highlighted Stowe’s long-standing involvement with the program and her expertise in equine economics, education and research. Her appointment reflects the university’s commitment to strengthening programs that support Kentucky’s signature horse industry and advancing interdisciplinary collaboration across teaching, research and Extension efforts.
Before joining the University of Kentucky in 2008, Stowe served as an assistant professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Texas Tech University and a doctorate in economics from Texas A&M University.
In her new role, Stowe will oversee the continued growth of UK Ag Equine Programs and help advance initiatives that support the future of equine agriculture at the local, national and international levels. She succeeds Jamie Macleod, who has served as director of the program since October 2019.
