Media ArticleRep. Lynn Smith has been named the recipient of the 2026 Commodity Award, one of the Georgia Farm Bureau’s highest honors. The award was presented during the organization’s annual Commodity Conference on August 13 and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Georgia agriculture. Smith was honored for her longstanding support of the state’s agricultural industry and her efforts to advocate for policies that benefit farmers, rural communities, and the overall agricultural economy.
The award recipient is selected by the GFB Board of Directors from nominations submitted by the organization's commodity advisory committees. Smith was honored for her long-standing support of agriculture, natural resource conservation, and rural communities throughout her public service career.
A Florida native and University of Georgia graduate, Smith recently completed her 30th year representing Georgia's 70th District in the Georgia House of Representatives. Prior to her legislative career, she worked as an educator and business owner, building a strong foundation of community involvement and leadership.
Since first being elected to the Georgia House in 1996, Smith has been a dedicated advocate for farmers, foresters, and rural communities. She served as chairwoman of the House Natural Resources and Environment Committee beginning in 2005, helping guide policies that balanced environmental stewardship with agricultural growth.
One of Smith's most significant accomplishments was her contribution to the development of Georgia's regional water planning framework. Through years of legislative efforts and policy initiatives, she helped establish science-based approaches to water management that continue to support the state's long-term resource planning.
During her legislative career, Smith also served on the Appropriations, Rules, and Reapportionment committees. Her work has influenced policies related to natural resources, environmental management, and economic development across Georgia.
Beyond her service in the Georgia House, Smith held leadership positions with regional organizations focused on energy and environmental issues. She served as chair of the Southern Legislative Conference Energy and Environment Committee and is a member of the Southern States Energy Board.
After earning her degree from the University of Georgia in 1968, Smith worked as a teacher, including at Newnan High School, where she taught French, history, and civics. A master gardener, she lives in Newnan and remains active in her community while enjoying time with her children and grandchildren.
