The University of Minnesota has appointed Shibu Jose as the next dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) and director of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES). His appointment is expected to begin on February 15, 2027, pending approval from the University's Board of Regents.
CFANS and MAES support Minnesota's agriculture and natural resource sectors through research, education, and outreach programs. The organizations collaborate with farmers, Tribal governments, industry partners, and local communities to promote innovation, sustainability, and economic development.
As dean and director, Jose will lead efforts related to agriculture, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, and community well-being. His role will focus on strengthening links between university research and practical applications across Minnesota's farms, forests, and waterways.
Jose currently serves as associate dean for research in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri and director of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station. During his leadership, agricultural research funding surpassed $117 million through partnerships with federal agencies, commodity groups, and agricultural technology companies.
With nearly 30 years of academic experience, including 12 years at the University of Florida, Jose has led major research and outreach initiatives. His work has advanced regenerative agriculture, digital agriculture technologies, water conservation, and interdisciplinary research that combines agricultural, economic, and social sciences.
As director of Missouri's agricultural experiment station, he managed more than 14,000 acres of research farmland across the state. He also expanded programs that connected researchers and producers through field demonstrations, conservation education, and technology-sharing events.
Jose is internationally recognized for his expertise in agroforestry and natural resource sciences. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society of American Foresters and recently received the 2026 agInnovation Excellence in Leadership Award.
“Dr. Jose brings an exceptional combination of scientific accomplishment, experience leading complex research enterprises, and a genuine commitment to public service,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Gretchen Ritter.
