NDSU's new Dr. David Cook Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program, funded by an anonymous estate gift, will prepare future agricultural leaders through coursework, industry engagement, and experiential learning.

An anonymous estate gift has established the Dr. David Cook Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program at North Dakota State University (NDSU), creating a new leadership development opportunity for students in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources. The program is designed to help students build the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly complex agricultural industry.

The for-credit program will span about nine months and combine academic coursework with professional development, industry engagement, and experiential learning. Students will gain practical knowledge and leadership experience to prepare for future careers in agriculture and related fields.

"This remarkable gift creates opportunities that will impact students for generations," said Adam Marx, professor of agricultural education and one of the program's faculty leaders. He noted that the initiative will help students develop the confidence and vision needed to address current and future challenges in agriculture.

The program is named in honor of former NDSU President David Cook, recognizing his commitment to student success and leadership development. Cook said the initiative builds on NDSU's tradition of preparing graduates to lead with integrity and purpose while strengthening their professional networks.

According to the donors, the program reflects their commitment to education, agriculture, and the next generation of leaders. Their gift is intended to create a lasting impact by supporting students who will contribute to the future of the agricultural industry.

The first cohort of scholars is expected to begin during the 2027-28 academic year. Participants will take part in leadership seminars, industry visits, networking opportunities, and engagement with agricultural leaders from North Dakota and the Upper Midwest.

To introduce the program, NDSU will host Lead from Here on November,12,2026, at the Memorial Union. The event will feature a keynote speaker, dinner, and discussions about leadership development and future participation opportunities.

The new program will also be highlighted during NDSU Giving Day, providing alumni, industry partners, and supporters with an opportunity to contribute. Additional donations will help expand student experiences and strengthen the program's long-term impact on agricultural leadership development.
