West Virginia State University (WVSU) has strengthened its national presence with the appointment of Dr. Ami M. Smith, Associate Provost, Dean, and Director of Agricultural Research and Extension, as Chair-Elect of the 1890 Association of Research Directors (ARD). The organization coordinates research activities among the nation's 19 historically Black 1890 Land-grant Universities.
Dr. Smith will serve a two-year term as Chair-Elect before becoming Chair of ARD for an additional two years. In this role, she will help guide collaborative research efforts and represent the interests of member institutions at the national level.
WVSU President Ericke S. Cage praised the appointment, noting that it reflects the university’s growing impact in research and innovation. He expressed confidence that Smith will help advance national research priorities and strengthen collaboration among the 1890 Land-grant Universities.
The ARD provides leadership and support for research programs focused on addressing agricultural, environmental, and food-related challenges. Through collaboration, member institutions work to develop solutions that benefit communities and contribute to broader advancements in research.
Smith’s appointment further enhances WVSU’s standing within the land-grant university system. The university continues to play an active leadership role nationally through President Cage’s service with the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the 1890 Universities Foundation Board of Directors.
Together, these leadership roles reflect WVSU’s commitment to research excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Smith’s new position is expected to create additional opportunities for partnership and support the collective mission of the nation’s 1890 Land-grant Universities.
