Corteva Agriscience has an exciting and challenging opportunity in the Predictive Safety Center (PSC) within Crop Protection Regulatory Science for an Environmental Chemistry and Metabolism Scientist. The scientist will represent the PSC function on multidisciplinary Discovery and Regulatory teams responsible for development and registration of new active ingredients and agricultural products. In addition, the person will guide the development and implementation of environmental fate and metabolism predictive tools. This position is located in Indianapolis, IN.

The successful candidate will serve as a lead scientist in the screening and development of new crop protection products in Discovery Phase; this includes:
  • Building internal innovative testing capabilities to predict the fate of chemicals in the environment, crops and biological systems enabling mitigation of regulatory roadblocks for Discovery phase molecules.
  • Guiding and conducting the qualitative and quantitative analysis to characterize the degradation kinetics and elucidate biotransformation products for new active compound screening in Discovery stages.
  • Overseeing environmental fate and metabolism studies at external laboratories to assess product safety including protocol preparation, interaction with lab scientists, critical evaluation of data, problem solving, and reporting of results. 
  • Collaborating with internal cross-function teams and external partners to explore and implement new predictive methods and approaches (e.g. in silico and in vitro studies).
  • Providing mentorship and coaching to junior scientists and research associates.
  • Providing environmental risk assessments for new active ingredients based upon environmental science data and in accordance with regulatory expectations.
  • Effectively utilizing organizational networking to influence decision making. 
The successful candidate will also contribute to the external science community, including publications and presentations in science-related arenas related to environmental fate and metabolism, and leverage that influence to benefit the company by:
  • Keeping current with developments in environmental chemistry and metabolism, and providing technical expertise and support to regulatory science, registration and business teams.
  • Representing Corteva at professional meetings, training and workshops.
  • Publishing and presenting scientific information at meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.


What expertise have you grown? What do you bring to the table? 
  • PhD degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, or related field with special emphasis in the disciplines of analytical, environmental chemistry, or metabolism.
  • 5+ years of laboratory research experience in analytical chemistry using liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and/or NMR etc. for qualitative and quantitative small molecule analysis.
  • Possesses a good understanding of trace analytical procedures in environmental, biological, or plant matrices and separation science principles.
  • Demonstrated competency in implementation of laboratory-based environmental fate studies and knowledge of metabolism of chemicals in plant, animal and environmental systems.
  • Relevant working experience in environmental fate or metabolism serving the agrochemical industry is preferred.
  • Strong scientific background and critical thinking skills coupled with application of scientific principles.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership abilities to manage and coordinate multiple projects and chemistries.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills that allow dissemination of complex technical issues in a clear, concise manner to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences.
