In order to maximize your efficiency and enjoyment from working at home, here are 5 ways that could help!

If you’ve ever worked or done a school project from home, you know how the time spent during these hours can get stale and even counter productive. To not only maximize enjoyment during work hours, but also boost productivity – here are 5 ways to make your home office environment a better experience!

  1. Set up Your Desk with Fun Items!

Setting up your desk with fun items can be super helpful and comforting throughout your workday. In my experience I’ve found that having a candle, a fun a coffee mug, and even a plant in a polar bear pot is super helpful to keep me on task and enjoy my experience much more. My co-workers do similar things. They have fun objects/toys, pictures, and even a diffuser going throughout the day. There are so many more things that you can put on your desk or have near you, and that’s the great part about it – it’s up to you!

  1. Attend Optional Virtual Social Gatherings to Network and Bond with Co-workers

In my and my co-workers’ experience of working virtually, we’ve collectively found that attending optional virtual social gatherings helps us feel more connected with each other and just happier in general. It’s given us the chance to make connections and have bonds with our co-workers that we wouldn’t have had if we hadn’t attended those meetings. Those optional meetings also give you the chance to have conversations with co-workers who you wouldn’t be working with closely. These can give you valuable connections further on in your professional career!

  1. Make Sure Your Camera is on

Some virtual jobs require your camera to be on during every meeting, and it’s for good reason. It helps you feel more engaged in the conversation when you are looking at someone’s face, compared to a bubble with initials in it. In my personal experience as a co-op student, having a camera on is required. However, because of that, turning on my camera for meetings has not only increased my productivity – but it helps keeps me more engaged on what we are discussing.

  1. Control your Background Noise

Silence is never something that I consider fun, especially when trying to work and be productive. It’s up to you to control your background noise as it’s something you wouldn’t be able to do if you worked in a physical office! Some of my co-workers choose calming sounds, like rain or even a fireplace – but the majority choose music. It’s up to you to figure out what you want to listen to in the background. Try and it and watch how it works wonders into your day!

  1. Go for a Walk

Getting up from your bed and walking a few steps to your work desk is efficient but staying inside all the time can be a little bit boring and gets stale after a while. Every lunch, I go out on a short walk just to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. I’ve found that after I go on these walks, I become more productive and just flat out ready to get my work done. It’s important to stay productive as it directly correlates with enjoying your workday!
