Skilled Trade careers in agriculture are booming — and four roles are leading the way. Discover why Service Technicians, Millwrights, Field Service Technicians, and Electricians are in such high demand, what each job involves, and what these trends mean for your career growth on AgCareers.com.

Sitting at a desk for eight hours a day isn’t for everyone. Some of us prefer the gogogo pace—getting our hands dirty, staying active, and fixing things! Fortunately, there’s no shortage of fastpaced roles that need skilled, handson talent.

Over the past 12 months, these are the top four in-demand Skilled Trade jobs we have seen:

  1. Service Technician

  1. Millwright

  1. Field Service Technician

  1. Electrician

A look inside these in-demand careers…

The most frequently posted role posted on AgCareers in the past year, under our Skilled Trade sector. Maintenance/Service Technicians are the point of contact for making repairs on agricultural?implements and lawn and garden equipment. They are responsible for implementing a basic diagnosis and executing it for clients. Maintenance/Service Technicians also work heavily with diesel engines, gasoline engines, and transmissions.

Millwright

A millwright is responsible for installing, repairing and troubleshooting mechanical equipment at sites such as production plants, farms and construction sites. They will use a variety of hand tools and equipment for cutting. Plus, they weld, interpret diagrams and create schematic drawings to complete a project. Millwrights work primarily with metal, high-precision machinery and equipment.

This role mirrors the responsibilities of a Service Technician but adds a dynamic twist—your “office” changes daily. Field Service Technicians travel to client locations, providing support wherever equipment needs maintenance or repair. From the middle of a field to a farm shop, you’ll be handson, mobile, and directly supporting customers in their environment.

Electrician

Electricians install and maintain electrical systems that power mechanical equipment. Their work includes running wiring, assembling electrical components, testing fixtures, and ensuring electrical systems operate safely and efficiently. They play a crucial role in supporting machinery, instrumentation, and infrastructure across a wide range of agricultural and industrial sites.

What This Means for Your Career…

  • If you’re early in your career: Roles like Service Technician offer fast entry points with room to specialize.

  • If you’re experienced: Millwright and Industrial Electrician roles often come with higher pay, shift premiums, and strong job security.

  • If you want mobility: Field Service Technician roles allow you to work onsite with customers—great for people who don’t want a desk job.
