Travel: This position requires travel to schools and events across BC
Type of position: Casual/part-time
The Mobile Dairy Classroom Experience (MDCE) is a fun and interactive educational experience for all ages. It is a trailer that has been modified to fit a milking unit, with room to transport two cows and one calf to events and schools across BC. The program delivers live milking demonstrations to a range of audiences.
During the demonstrations, a presenter describes the process of producing milk, speaks about the dairy industry, and allows the audience to engage in discussion and questions, while a facilitator demonstrates the milking process.
This experience is designed to mitigate the urban-rural divide, clear misconceptions, and give the audience an authentic depiction of the dairy industry.
Reporting to the Communications Manager, the MDCE Animal Handler will be responsible for the care and handling of cows for the MDCE program. During presentations, while the Presenter outlines the milking process, the Animal Handler or Facilitator will demonstrate the milking procedure and ensure that the cow(s) are comfortable, using best management practices for cattle care.
The Animal Handler will carry out some physical labour, such as setting up and taking down the MDCE display. In addition, the Animal Handler’s knowledge may be drawn upon when answering public inquiries during presentations. The Animal Handler must be able to work independently and as part of a team and possess effective communication skills. The Animal Handler plays a critical role in the success of the MDCE through educating the general public about the dairy industry.
