Trait Discovery Project Specialist 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Trait Discovery Project Specialist Senior, are to: 


  • Oversee greenhouse and field experiments across locations;
  • Manage day-to-day project plans and operations including trialing, material advancement and seed increases;
  • Schedule project activities according to crop cycles, supervise technicians and contract labor, and apply proper planning tools to manage tasks;
  • Have broad understanding of genetic methodologies and scientific principles;
  • Coordinate operational deliverables to advance trait discovery projects in consultation with a Scientist;
  • Prepare reports with large data sets for supervisor review, under time constraints, across various project types;
  • Maintain up-to-date and in-system records on project progress;
  • Leverage content experts to define and advance project milestones;
  • Work both independently and align with stakeholders across the organization to deliver results;
  • Work with external service providers or outsourcing providers;
  • Independently execute various analyses with proper recording and interpretation of data;
  • Ensure routine use of phenotypic data collection tools;
  • Maintain enterprise databases, ensuring a detailed record of active nurseries, field trials, experiments and phenotypic data;
  • Collaborate with global team members on data analysis on R using tools such as Git and Domino;
  • Identify opportunities for digital tool development to streamline operational tasks;
  • Understand the technical basis of the company’s products;
  • Identify opportunities for protection of intellectual property, document project progress in electronic notebooks and contribute to invention disclosures and patents;
  • Participate in moderate to extensive problem solving which includes team members in other functions;
  • Consolidate and report data to inform decisions with content experts;
  • Actively participate in cross-functional operational teams;
  • Ensure high safety standards and follows Health Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines and site safety programs.

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Genetics, Breeding, Plant Biology or a related field, with at least two years of expereince, or Master of Science with at least one year of experience;
  • Passion to grow and willingness to be intellectually challenged;
  • Willingness to influence and inspire others;
  • Be responsible for database management, data analysis and pertinent software;
  • Experience with R or Python programming languages;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of molecular biology principles related to plant breeding, such as molecular markers and sequencing techniques;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and enjoy problem solving;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-based and cross-functional team environment;
  • Lead a small team of assistants or technicians.
