SPI ISE Development Scientist 

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Seed Production Innovation Science & Engineering (ISE) Development Scientist, are to:

 

  • Support development efforts in key Seed Production innovation initiatives including Advanced Pollination Technologies, Hybrid Wheat and Hybrid Rice;
  • Perform research and contribute to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, or trade secrets related to RC and Veg seed production;
  • Conduct independent research and execute lab, greenhouse,field protocols;
  • Collaborate cross-functionall with key internal stakeholders including Breeding, Regional Production, Production Research and external stakeholders to deliver results 
  • Support implementation of quality testing assays suitable/optimized for mobile field and lab environments;
  • Develop a process to enable genetic, physiological, and health testing of biological samples in a single workflow;
  • Develop requirements for inventory management system that is optimized for Advanced Pollination workflow and end users in Research and Development (R&D) and Product Supply;
  • Assist in establishing testing protocols, validation, and deployment of pollen quality assays to the production;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of pollen inventory management system in the production;
  • Define and critically review Design-of-Experiments for statistical power of in-field validations for lab, field and facilities proof of concepts;
  • Partner with Legal and Intellectual Property (IP) teams to ensure that all pollen research and related efforts are in compliance with FTO and IP valuation processes;
  • Work with internal and external science and engineering collaborators to shorten development cycles, compare different approaches, and add new projects/technologies to the team;
  • Translate non-technical stakeholder requirements into experimental design and research projects, and advance them through the SPI project advancement process to implementation;
  • Deliver analytical reports and present results to stakeholders and technical team members and maintain IP-related documentation of results.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science with at least five years of relevant experience in Agronomy, Plant/Seed Physiology, Plant Molecular/Reproductive Biology, Genetics, Bio/Medical Engineering, Biochemistry or plant science related discipline or Master of Science with at least two years or experience or Ph.D. with at least one year of experience;
  • Prior experience with molecular, genomic and cytological tools and techniques;
  • Knowledge of statistical tools;
  • Experience in planning and executing experimental designs as well as analyses and interpretation of data;
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with team members and stakeholders;
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency;
  • Strong communication skills to all levels of internal and external leadership and scientists/engineers with diverse backgrounds;
  • Drive and self-motivation to work in the challenging, fast-paced, and continually changing environment to enable technological innovations for unique applications in the supply chain production environment;
  • Willingness to travel 20% of time.
