Job Description:




The primary responsibilities for this position are insectary support including daily colony maintenance tasks and performing method development experiments.  In addition, this position will coordinate quality control and continuous improvement efforts within the insectary, lab, and field environments. Maintenance and updates of digital data capture, data storage, and data dashboards are also within scope.




  • Delivers daily/weekly targets. Directly support insectary 70% of the time. This includes insect colony maintenance (feeding, cleaning cages, diet prep, etc.).
  • Has primary or shared responsibility for a specialized laboratory technology.  Accountable for cross-functional work in multiple platforms/process areas
  • Solves problems of routine to moderate scope; optimizes workflows; validates methods using multiple data sources. Uses specialized scientific techniques to conducting experiments and process improvements.
  • Adheres to established protocols and techniques. May operate and troubleshoot instrumentation; Solves routine problems requiring original thinking and deductive reasoning of diverse procedures within specialized laboratory technology
  • Prioritizes and coordinates work within a large team and provides training to contingent workforce; maintaining detailed record keeping and required documentation.  
  • Achieves commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and best practices. 
  • Performs a variety of experiments with accuracy
  • Skilled in organizing and reporting specialized reports, including analyzing and interpreting the results of experiments, production KPIs, cost/benefit analysis, and lab related issues to partners and key stakeholders.
  • The successful candidate will thrive on meeting challenges, insist on high quality deliverables, demonstrate effective problem solving skills, and will have proven initiative in  some categories of accomplishments, either individually or as part of a group.  Takes initiative in keeping current with developments in specialized area
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications with a focus on Excel, PowerPoint and web based systems. Maintain/optimize PowerApps, data systems, and Spotfire dashboards developed for insectary data visualization.

Required Qualifications:


  • MS in Biology, Entomology, or related field with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in academia or industry, or BS with 2+ years of related experience in academia or industry, or non-degreed with 10+ years relevant experience in academia or industry.
  • Strong entomology background with the ability to independently design experiments and analyze data.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experimental data, time, and resources.
  • Must possess agility and adaptability to keep up with changing company priorities and balance multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with data analysis and visualization software.


Workplace conditions:

This position may require working evenings and weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. Work may involve long periods of standing or sitting and handling different insect life stages. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This individual must have the ability to pass a physical and pulmonary fit test for respirator use and have the ability to lift 45 pounds. Must have the ability to work for long periods of time in insect rearing rooms under warm and humid conditions (80 °F and 60% RH). Steady hands, comfortable handling insects, and not have an aversion to the odors put off by insects.
