Novel Modalities Lead (Bayer Crop Sciences R&D - Small Molecules) 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Novel Modalities Lead (Bayer Crop Sciences R&D - Small Molecules), are to:


  • Lead the team to promote novel modalities with differentiated safety profiles into the Crop Protection pipeline;
  • Be a key contributor to the Small Molecule target-based strategy via interactions with Hit Discovery group and the Pest, Weed Disease Control Indications;
  • Partner with Hit Discovery to prioritize molecular targets for investigation; 
  • Collaborate with external technology providers to discover novel modalities against prioritized modes of action;
  • Assemble and create suitable assay testing schemes to characterize novel modalities;
  • Partner within Small Molecules and across Research and Development (R&D) functions to leverage existing infrastructure and to initiate method development where necessary;
  • Lead the team to develop specific lab-based assays to assess the biochemical and cellular potency of lead compounds from internal efforts and external collaborations;
  • Lead and develop team through active mentoring and engagement;
  • Actively contribute on cross-functional (Plant Pathology, Entomology, Weed Science, etc.), cross-divisional & strategic external Discovery project teams.

Required Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. with 8 or more years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with 12 or more years of relevant experience in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Plant Biochemistry, or related fields;
  • Track record of supporting cultural and technical diversity to effectively engage broad thinking and problem solving;
  • Demonstrated record of innovation in cellular/biochemical assay development;
  • Experience leading project teams toward technical and development goals while solving technical and logistical problems to sustain progress;
  • Demonstrated success activating to action in times of clarity and ambiguity;
  • Ability to travel independently 5-10 % of the time both international and domestic.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in discovery of novel modalities such as peptide-based therapeutics, oligonucleotide-based technologies, protein-protein inhibition/stabilization, time dependent inhibition, and/or targeted protein degradation.


Domestic relocation may be available for this role.

Position will be based in Chesterfield, MO (St. Louis area).
