Genotyping Innovation Intern 

PURPOSE

The Genotyping Innovation Intern will conduct an approximate 3-month long project focused on developing  benchtop sequencing and targeted genomic workflows.  This position will design, execute, optimize, troubleshoot and analyze experiments to drive development of new approaches to obtaining genomic data with the goal to further our understanding of plant biology and crop improvement.
 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role are to:

• Evaluate and develop methodologies relating to benchtop and targeted sequencing for genomic characterization of plants.
• Drive experimental design with guidance from manager.
• Primary or shared project responsibility for executing experiments on next generation sequencing workflows with assistance from scientists in the Genotyping Discovery and Development team. 
• Analyze sequencing and genomic data. Collaborate with computational scientists as needed for analysis.
• Provide assessment of workflows and make a presentation to the greater Precision Genomics team at the end of the internship.

Required Qualifications:

• Must be registered and currently enrolled in a graduate program – MS or PhD – pursuing a degree in Biology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, or related field. 
• Demonstrated interest and coursework in subjects related to genetics and/or molecular biology.
• Curiosity and self-motivation to be exposed to and learn different molecular biology techniques and their applications.
• Ability to work within a team-based environment of other scientists.
• Agility in the face of changing projects or demands.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data.
• Experience with documentation and presentation of scientific results.
