Senior Biologist I (2201357) – Story City, IA


Where the Chemistry Happens 


The successful candidate will be adept at conducting agricultural field trials and generating data necessary to enable decisions for future development of research compounds. Evaluations will include research and development compounds as well as facilitating commercial demonstrations of future and/or current products to customers and key influencers.


A key activity of the Field Biologist will be managing and overseeing general operations of the BASF Story City Research Farm location in Iowa and will include site oversight and personnel management. Additionally, the Field Biologist will own the relationships with university and private cooperators in Iowa and will interact with university research and extension programs for building local use recommendations for candidate products.


Additional duties will include:


  • Working closely with area BASF Technical Service personnel to accommodate education and training activities of BASF internal staff as well as external customers and key influencers.


  • Conducting BASF internal presentations for data summary and knowledge transfer as well as providing external presentations in professional meetings.


  • Maintain awareness of external commercial and experimental compounds and communicate pertinent competitive information to Biology, Tech Service and Sales colleagues.


  • Seamless communication with and actively supporting RTP based Biology Project Leaders and local Tech Service colleagues.


  • Foster innovative and entrepreneurial thought processes in finding new and valuable opportunities for our compounds and products.


Formula for Success


  • Master’s Degree of Science with 7 years’ experience or PhD with 5 years’ experience in an Agronomy field e.g., Weed Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology


  • Working knowledge of crop production and pest management practices of field crops.


  • Solid knowledge of pesticide chemistries and modes of action.


  • Proficient in small plot research including plot design, layout, analysis, calibration, spraying, and data collection.


  • Strong statistical and analytical skills important to interpret data.


  • Working experience with farm machinery.


  • Demonstrated excellent writing and presentation skills.


  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with ARM, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


  • Demonstrated excellent teamwork, leadership, self-motivation, and time management skills.


  • Demonstrated organizational skills


  • Minimum of 2 years or more in people management.


  • Ability to work in cross functional teams to accomplish shared goals.


  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.


  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others to reach common goals.


  • Creativity and ingenuity in determining the performance and commercial viability of compounds from a technical viewpoint.


  • Consistent and dependent work ethic in handling routine tasks.
