ADM Edible Bean Specialties This is a full time, exempt position

Position Summary:

ADM Edible Bean Specialties is seeking a plant breeder to breed and develop dry edible beans from a variety of market classes of dry beans. The plant breeder would be responsible for breeding lines of dry beans and continue plant selections to ultimately develop varieties to be grown and sold as certified seed. ADM Edible Bean Specialties Seedwest division owns and breeds beans in Black Beans, Dark Red Kidney Beans, White Kidney, Pinks, Small Reds, Yellows, Green Baby Lima's and white baby limas. The plant breeder will do plant crossings in a greenhouse environment to maximize our plant breeding program. Under the direction of the
General Manager of Seedwest the Plant Breeder will have not limited to but including the following responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Apply fundamental and applied plant breeding techniques to dry bean breeding. Develop and maintain a comprehensive breeding program and strategy to breed new dry edible bean varieties that have an improvement over the current traits in the market of dry beans including but not limited to yield, plant architecture, disease resistance, canning quality, fertility use, drought tolerance, and days to maturity
  • Plant breeding with an end goal of developing proprietary varieties that provide superior traits to what is currently being offered in the market
  • Investigate and make recommendations to the General Manager with regards to new technologies such as DNA marking, genetic editing technology and keep the General Manager informed on new breeding techniques as they arise. To use cost effective new technology to help develop superior and improved genetics to help keep Seedwest out in the forefront with the varieties the industry wants to plant.
  • Manage and fully utilize the plant greenhouse to maximize improved new potential varieties that come out of the breeding program.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the seed plots in Idaho
  • Maintain all aspects of our existing and future seed stock program. From pure line selections to bulking up, maintaining, and harvesting inventory of pure seed stock on the trial land
  • Responsible to find additional breeding material to help make the breeding program a success
  • Manage the land the Idaho plots and seedstock increases are located on which will include lease land and working with an area grower to swap ADM ground or lease ground to accommodate the size plot needed on a yearly basis.
  • Coordinate with current staff, public universities on replicated trial locations across the proper growing regions. Utilizing long term data to place the best varieties in those specific regions.
Job Requirements:

Entrepreneurial and owner's mindset Strong desire to exceed expectations. Masters Degree or higher in the area of plant breeding and or genetics related. A minimum of 5 years experience with a plant breeding related job or field. Experience in dry beans is desirable but not required.Relocation assistance is available with this position.
