Scoular's business is growing! Scoular is currently recruiting individuals with strong backgrounds in food manufacturing to work in a new, state of the art, 105,000 square foot freeze-dried pet food ingredients facility. Qualified candidates have the opportunity to help Scoular capitalize on the fast-growing and high demand freeze dried pet food market, a market projected to grow 20% per year, by working in a brand-new facility located in Seward, NE on track to open in Fall 2020.

The Head of Operations (alternate titles: Plant Manager, Site Director, Manufacturing Facility Director) is responsible for the overall leadership, direction and management of the manufacturing plant operations and its team members. This leader is fully accountable for meeting plant safety, food safety, quality, environmental, cost and operating plan objectives. Other responsibilities include customer relationship involvement, talent leadership and development, implementing and assuring alignment with business strategies, processes and programs to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements related to food safety, employee safety, security, environmental and human resource compliance. This role ensures that the Company provides products that meet our customer needs and represents the company and its interests in the community.
Two important responsibilities also include community engagement and building support within the local city/state leadership for the new facility team.  This leader will report to the General Manager for the business and is part of the business senior leadership team.

Job Responsibilities
Environment, Employee and Food Safety:
  • Be a Safety and Food Safety Champion
  • Create an environment in which employees go home in the same (or better) condition than they arrived
  • Actively work to prevent/eliminate hazards that cause injury or illness
  • Champion safety processes, ergonomic efforts and hold location accountable for keeping their co-workers safe
  • Champion the elimination of adulterants in our end-products
  • Ensure resources are available and all processes are being followed that help us minimize risk to consumers, customers and the company
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal environmental laws and regulations

Operations Management:
  • Ensure effective and efficient operations
  • Determine and maintain production goals and cost controls throughout facility
  • Develop budgets and ensure cost containment on variable cost per Lb. and fixed actual dollar spend
  • Monitor and achieve KPIs. Maximize plant capabilities including operating efficiencies, first pass quality, throughput delivery in order to drive margin target attainment and optimal facility performance
  • Maintain the physical condition and appearance which reflects the standards of quality and service of our business
  • Develop leaders for Company and provide tools and structure for location to meet their P&L objectives
  • Ultimately, plant efficiencies and managing product mix will be critical to driving long term profitability goals; operating knowledge of cost drivers and budget management is critical.

Customer Focus:

This leadership position is critical to ensuring we meet the needs of our customers as well as focusing on continuous improvement opportunities for future growth.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or 10 years of equivalent experience
  • Minimum 8+ years food/meat processing manufacturing experience with various roles and progressive responsibility in further processing operations. Background in Engineering, Maintenance, and/or Quality is valuable.
  • Minimum 5+ years of direct people management / plant leadership experience (influencing, coaching, managing through others, developing diverse work teams).
  • Demonstrated ability and understanding of internal (plants/operations) and external (customers) relationships and how to determine what is best for Company (employee safety, engagement, profitability)
  • Technical expertise with freeze dried product development and technology
  • Experience with Raw & Ready to Eat manufacturing environments and quality programs
  • Demonstrated experience and expert working knowledge of regulatory agency and food safety requirements: OSHA, FSMA, SQF/BRC, FDA, USDA, HACCP plans, etc. Organic, non-GMO experience is valuable.
  • Experienced in creating and managing capital deployment strategy
  • Demonstrated experience and proven track record in continuous improvement and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships with customers
  • Strong team builder and team player (player/coach principle)
  • Must be able to communicate effectively written, verbal and in presentation with all levels of the business, community, and customer.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
 
Preferred Qualifications
  •  Experience managing a facility that handles raw meat products
  •  Experience training in Continuous Improvement initiatives (Green Belt, Black Belt, Lean Manufacturing, etc.)
  •  Experience managing large teams
  •  Experience with greenfield or brownfield manufacturing investments
  •  Bilingual or conversational in Spanish as a second language
