This position will report to the Technical Services Manager.
The Development Technician should be knowledgeable of all plant processes and should be aware of and follow all plant safety and environmental rules and conduct all tests and fieldwork in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. All work and tests will be conducted maintaining high quality standards. Time spent on activities related to test processes is very important to the daily activities of the Development Technician. The importance of the information received and relayed could have an impact on material and production outcomes. The information reviewed and interpreted by the Development Technician is extremely important to planning the daily activities of support operations. Procedures that have an impact on human safety such as the Lock Out /Tag Out and Confined Space permits are coordinated and monitored by the Development Technician position.  Evaluating information to determine compliance and test standards is a key responsibility of the Development Technician. It requires following Standard Operation Procedures, safety, and environmental procedures, work rules, instructions, and daily production plans.
 
What you will do:
  • Collect data and samples to assist operating personnel to optimize and troubleshoot their process. S/He will be aware of safety and environmental requirements of the process
  • Conduct all departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and understand the safety and environmental requirements for each SOP.
  • Assist in developing and writing SOPs for new tasks
  • Assemble laboratory and pilot plant equipment into functioning units as directed
  • Use hand tools, power tools, gas and electric welders, laboratory equipment, and instruments such as: voltmeter, viscometer, and a Sotcher
  • Fabricate development equipment as directed. He should be able to work with wood, plastic, metal, glass, pipe fittings, electricity, motors, pumps, gas engines, and hydraulic systems
  • Learn about all pilot plant operations (phosphoric acid, POLY11, DAP/MAP, evaporator, filter press, tube furnace, VSEP, purified acid, bright dip, and anodizing) and be able to troubleshoot and maintain them
  • Make observations, collect data, and accurately record the data either on paper or electronically. He should be able to conduct basic mathematical calculations
  • Assist in designing experimental equipment and process systems
  • Work with customers directly to set up tests, monitor quality of product, collect data or samples, or provide assistance with operating problems
  • Maintain and repair pilot plant equipment as needed. This requires both mechanical and electrical knowledge
  • Monitor supplies and order replacements as necessary
  • Work in a safe manner and maintain the work area in safe/clean conditions. The technician will fix safety problems or report them to the supervisor if s/he needs assistance
  • Use a PC to order supplies, initiate purchase requisitions and work orders, log-in and look-up samples on the QMS, use spreadsheet and word processor programs, use the company e-mail system, and use the intranet to find SDSs and read the Safety, Quality and Environmental manuals
  • Use departmental digital camera to photograph tests to enhance reports
  • Supervise contractors assigned to him; train and help new technicians develop their skills; assist other Technical Services personnel, as required
  • Complete additive and sample orders for customers
  • Conduct monthly departmental safety meetings, as directed
  • Participate in additional safety initiatives as necessary
  • Travel to the Morehead City port as needed to inspect the port and designated ship(s) for overseas MAP/DAP shipments
  • The Technician will be compliant with all Food/Animal Feed Safety Management Systems at all times
  • Flexibility is necessary to meet the demands of frequently changing priorities
  • Available to work off shifts and overtime when requested
  • Available to travel and work at other NUTRIEN facilities or customer locations
  • Complete all training and update this training as new processes, rules, and skills are required
What you will bring:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required. One must maintain a valid forklift operator’s permit
  • National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) testing is required for all hourly applicants of Nutrien-Aurora and must be uploaded along with your resume during the application process to be considered for employment with Nutrien-Aurora
    • Applicants must complete this test and meet a minimum of 5 in Graphic Literacy, 5 on Applied Mathematics and 4 on Workplace Documents in order to be considered eligible for employment with Nutrien
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • Employee must maintain all security credentials, MOSHA, MARSEC, and Food Safety Certifications
  • Must provide proof of eligibility to legally work in the United States
  • Sound judgment and knowledge of departmental equipment and procedures to work and solve problems without close supervision
