A new scholarship endowment at Morehead State University will help support students studying agriculture, thanks to a generous gift from the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association (BTGCA).
The Morehead State University Foundation has introduced the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Scholarship Endowment, created to provide financial assistance to students pursuing degrees in agricultural fields.
The fund reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the future of agriculture through education and workforce development.
Founded in 1922, the BTGCA served burley tobacco farmers throughout Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri.
Over the years, the cooperative became a major advocate for producers, helping market tobacco, representing grower interests, and managing the federal tobacco loan program for several decades.
The organization also promoted the broader economic contributions of agriculture within rural communities.
After beginning the process of dissolution in 2020, cooperative leaders and members explored ways to leave a lasting impact on the agricultural sector.
Their decision to establish a scholarship endowment ensures that the cooperative’s values of education, stewardship, and agricultural advancement will continue to benefit future generations.
The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in agriculture-related programs at Morehead State University. Eligible applicants must also maintain satisfactory academic standing with the university.
The application deadline for the scholarship is June 15. University officials encourage qualified students to apply and take advantage of the opportunity to receive support for their educational goals.
