Packaging Manager

Overview

Packaging managers supervise packaging operations for finished products and goods at processing facilities. They manage operations by directing employees, maintaining packaging inventories and scheduling equipment maintenance. Packaging managers will look for opportunities to make packaging processes more efficient and sustainable by cutting waste or improving work flow.

 

What responsibilities will I have?

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate employee activities
  • Ensure that products are properly packaged and labelled
  • Collaborate with packaging engineers on new packaging projects
  • Communicate effectively with production personnel at all levels
  • Ensure all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to workforce safety are adhered to
  • Make recommendations on packaging operations to make them more efficient and sustainable
  • Plan, coordinate and execute continuous improvement projects
  • Coordinate with warehouse and shipping department on the movement of finished products
  • Work with logistics teams to determine how much materials are needed for production
  • Track and report on production and safety metrics
  • Ensure that good housekeeping and safe operating procedures and practices are followed throughout the facilities
  • Schedule the maintenance of equipment and outside contractors
  • Ensure that equipment is operating properly and efficiently
  • Work with the maintenance team by reporting issues and identifying problems
  • Analyze and resolve workplace problems or assist in finding solutions
  • Lead shift, safety, crew and production meetings
  • Administer time, payroll, documentation related to safety, hazards and reporting
  • Coordinate staff training and skill development

 

What education and training is required?

A bachelor's degree in supply chain management, operations, agricultural business or industrial engineering may be required. However, experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment for multiple years is a requirement before taking on a managerial role.

 

To pursue a career as a Packaging Manager:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, physics, computer skills, biology and mathematics.
